Spring Newsletter – April 19, 2000

The Spring General Membership Meeting was held on April 11^th. Here are some highlights:

Awards and Recognition:

During the Spring Meeting, the following awards were presented and recognition was given:

• Rookie of the Year Award: James Bauer. As a first year member, Jim actively participated in league play while also donating substantial time during the majority of our fundraising events for the year.

• A special thank you to Dave Reinardy. Dave spent hours in the kitchen cooking for the Men’s Bonspiel and Second Chance, as well as helping with other activities which needed attention.

• A special thank you to Jim Jerulle, Sr. Jim spends countless hours each week maintaining the ice all season. He has done this job for years with little or no help. If it were not for Jim, we would not have the great ice that we do. Make sure you go out of your way to thank Jim when you see him at Sammy’s Pizza this summer!

• Fundraiser Chairs: A HUGE thank you to the following members who ran very successful fundraisers this season:

Reverse Raffle: Don Moquin, Paul Hanke, and Chris McMahon

Men’s Bonspiel: Chris McMahon

Second Chance Tournament: Geoff Goodland, Jennifer Rhude, Phil Baxter, and Paul Hanke (to name a few)

Mixed Bonspiel: Lon and Bonnie Hennig-Piper

End-of-the-Year Bonspiel/Party: Larry and Jan Morse & Dick and Dixie Roe

Kidney Bonspiel Mike Peplinski and Jennifer Rhude

Thrift Sale: Bob and Nora Fuller

• Thank you to all members who helped at all of the fundraisers, and especially those who sold more than their share of Reverse Raffle tickets. Thank you also to members who inadvertently did not receive proper recognition this year for their donations of money, food, and time.

• National Level Players: Congratulations to the following members who completed at the National and World level this season:

Ryan Quinn: National Men’s Champion; World Men’s (Fourth Place)

Mike Peplinski: National Men’s (Second Place)

Corey Ward: National Men’s (Second Place)

Sara Sigel: National Junior Women’s Competitor

New Board Members:

• Paul Hanke and Mike Peplinksi completed their terms on the Board this season. Thank you to Paul and Mike for all of their efforts during their time of the Board.

• The following new board members were elected during the Spring Meeting: James Bauer, Jack Reali, and Marcia Morey. These new members join Dan Herzberg, Lon Piper, and Chris McMahon.

Summerspiel 2000:

Doug and Dawn Jackson have volunteered to run the 2000 Summerspiel, which will be held June 16^th-June 18^th. As most of you know, this is Doug and Dawn’s first year at the ECCC, and we greatly appreciate their willingness to take on this event! This is a big job, and we need as much help as possible. Please call Doug and Dawn (830-9772) to offer your help with some of the preliminary arrangements.

Like last year, each league will be responsible for a specific day during the Summerspiel:

Tuesday Men’s League is responsible for Friday, June 16^th

The Mixed League and Women’s League are responsible for Saturday, June 17^th

Thursday Men’s League is responsible for Sunday, June 18^th (including tear down).

We need one volunteer from each league to contact league members to sign up for work shifts and food donations (bars, salads, veggie trays). Bonnie Hennig-Piper has volunteered to be the Saturday contact person (thank you Bonnie!). Please call Doug to volunteer to be the contact person for Friday or Sunday. Workers will also be needed to set up Hobbs on Thursday, June 15^th at 7pm.

Also: a workday is planned for Wednesday, May 31^st to set the circles at Hobbs. If you can help, please call Doug or Chris McMahon (836-9743). The more people we have, the faster this jobs goes!

OTHER NEWS:

USCA Pin Program:

The USCA has started a Donation Program. This is new program dedicated to supporting the USCA’s goal of growing the sport of curling. The donations are used to build membership in clubs, regions, and across the U.S. Donors receive a pin as a "thank you" for a contribution; there are five pin levels. If you would like to make a donation to count towards this season, please contact Chris McMahon (836-9743) by April 28^th.

USCA Curling "Boot Camp":

The USCA will hold an instructional one-day seminar in Rice Lake in the fall. During the seminar, instructors will offer "hands-on" suggestions for new and experienced curlers to improve their game. We will provide the dates of the seminar on the Web Page, as soon as the dates are finalize.

Membership Booklet:

We plan to print a new Membership Booklet in the late summer. If you aware of any business(es) which would be willing to pay for an advertisement in the booklet (to help offset the printing cost), please contact Paul Hanke (836-9888).

Annual Canoe Trip:

Mark you calendars - the annual canoe trip is set for Saturday, July 22^nd. All members are invited. Please call Birdell or Judy Snudden (834-5996) for more details.

Open House 2000:

It is not too early to think about recruiting new members for the 2000-2001 season! The Fall Open Houses are tentatively set for Thursday, October 26^th and Friday, October 27^th.
